SGM Selvaraj Address 2015

Most Venerable the Past Sovereign Grand Masters, Distinguished guests, Grand Council Officers and my Brethren: Greetings.

It is my great honour and privilege to welcome you to this, our 31st annual Assembly at this beautiful Hilton Toronto Airport Hotel & Suites, Mississauga, Ontario. Brethren, I do hope that you have enjoyed yesterday and this morning and that you are seeing new and exciting things happening within your Order.

Brethren, the year 2015 brings us great opportunity and prosperity. I believe our future will be founded on what we have achieved this year. I believe many years from now our future generation will see this, as the year shaped the Allied Masonic Degrees of Canada.
Today, I stand before you as a very proud Mason, who has led this promising grand body for the past two years. My Brethren I present to you “the Allied Masonic Degrees of Canada” a true national Masonic organization having active Councils across our great nation, from coast to coast. We have not only increased the number of Councils by 4 but also increased the number of new members by almost 80.

Instituting New Councils:
I am very pleased to report to you that we have instituted the following 4 new Councils.
1). Borealis Council UD was Instituted on Saturday Aug. 23, 2014 in Edmonton, Alberta. This is a very promising Council which is concentrating on Masonic education and the supplemental Degrees.

2). Golden Horseshoe Council UD was Instituted on Saturday Sept. 06, 2014 in Dunville, Ontario. A highly active Council who have presented papers in every meeting, have initiated new members and on its way to success.

3). Peace Council UD was instituted on Thursday May 14, 2015 in Dawson Creek, BC. A very enthusiastic Council which will prosper with time and experience.

4). Atlantic Council UD was instituted in St. Johns, NL on Saturday, June 27, 2015. We had 31 founding members including the current Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Newfoundland, the current Grand First Principal of the Grand Chapter of Newfoundland and many other PGMs and PGFPs.
There was a very strong presence of our Grand Officers on this day for Instituting Atlantic Council including 4PSGMs, our Grand Secretary, DGM, GSW, GJW, GJW elect and a PDDGM. This was a day of history making my Brethren when our dream for the last 31 years became a reality. A special thank you to M. W. Bro. Gerald W. Budden IPGM of Grand Lodge of Newfoundland and Labrador who laid the ground work for this new Council.

Brethren, we have the Sovereign Masters of all 4 new Councils with us today and I would like them to stand and be recognized for the fantastic job they are doing on our behalf.………………………

Brethren, you have also heard the approval of granting Charter to both, Golden Horseshoe Council No. 222 and Borealis Council No. 223. We wish them well and pray to TGDOA to guide them in the years to come.

We also had the pleasure of admitting R. W. Bro. George O’Leary, Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia and the Grand Supreme Ruler of the Order of the Secret Monitor of Canada, into our ancient Order on Friday August 07, 2015 at this very hotel. This is another day of history making my Brethren as I believe the accomplishment we have made this Friday will pave our way to start many AMD Councils in Nova Scotia. I welcome Bro. O’Leary as the newest member of the Allied Masonic Degrees of Canada. For those of you who haven’t met him I would ask Bro. O’Leary to stand and be recognized.

Meritorious Service Award:
Brethren, you have heard the report of the Chairman of the Awards Committee. I feel we have made the right choice in selecting the recipient for this prestigious Award. This Brother has held York Council together during the time of hardship and turmoil. He has led this Council to be a functioning Council and continues to do so. We are delighted and honoured today to present this award to Ven. Bro. George Parisi, Kt.

I believe the concordant bodies should support each other and the Brethren should get an opportunity for more light. Hence this year we have invited Order of the Secret Monitor of Canada, Universal Craftsmen Council of Engineers Inc., the Operatives and the Order of the High Priesthood of Ontario to have information tables at our Grand Session. I hope our Brethren would have had a chance to meet with those representatives and share information.

Visitations to Canadian Councils:
Brethren, I am very pleased to report to you that I have visited all Councils in our Grand Jurisdiction including the new Councils and also many Councils, twice or more. On all of my visits I enjoyed the true friendship and love of our Brethren. It was a humbling experience meeting such a wonderful group of Brethren who have dedicated their time for Masonic education and the advancement of the Allied Masonic Degrees.
On March 14, 2015, I was very humbled to receive an Honorary Life Membership in my mother Council, Raymond C. Purslow No. 170.
It was totally unexpected and was a true honour to the Office I hold. My heartfelt gratitude to all the members of Raymond C. Purslow Council.

Overseas Visitations with Sister Jurisdictions:
As your Grand Master I have been invited to many national and international Masonic events:
1). On October 28, 2015, I once again attended the Grand Council of the Order of the Allied Masonic Degrees of England and Wales and its Districts and Councils Overseas, in London England, where I was received in proper form. I enjoyed the hospitality of the Grand Master M. W. Bro. Thomas Firth Jackson and the friendship of many Brethren from England and other visiting countries.

2). On December 12 & 13, 2014, I had the privilege of attending the first annual celebrations of the Grand Bodies of AMD, OSM & R&S Masters in Chennai, India.
I was accompanied by R. Ven. Bro. Noel Joseph KGC, PDDGM. This was our second visit to India. We, once again enjoyed the journey and the delicious food Chennai had to offer. It was a delight to meet Brethren with whom we had made a strong bond from the year before. The hospitality and the warm welcome extended to us by their Grand Master M. W. Bro. M. Chellappa and their Grand Secretary V. W. Bro. Bharat Epur is second to none. As you know we are in full amity with the Grand Council of AMD in India. Last year I recommended R. Ven. Bro. Noel Joseph to be the Grand Representative of the Grand Council of India near our Grand Council. I know Bro. Joseph will work diligently to strengthen the ties between our two Grand Councils. M. W. Bro. M. Chellappa is unable to attend today due to a pressing emergency with his civil duties.

3). January 27 to 31, 2015 I attended the AMD Masonic week celebrations held in Reston, Virginia, USA. I was accompanied by R. Ven. Bro. Noel Joseph KGC, PDDGM, V. Ven. Bro. David G. Walker KG (Grand Governor General of the York Rite Sovereign College) and Ven. Bro. Richard B. Allgood Kt, Sovereign Master of Golden Horseshoe Council UD. As always it was a wonderful event. We met many old friends and made many new. We have today M. Ven. Bro. Douglas S. Moore SGC, Sovereign Grand Master of AMD USA and his lady with us to celebrate our fraternal friendship.

4). I regret that I was unable to attend the Masonic Week in Romania between May 14 – 16, 2015 due to the institution of Peace Council UD. Masonic Week in Romania is where the York Rite bodies of Romania hold their Annual Sessions, including AMD. I am looking forward to attending AMD Romania in the future.

Visitation to Grand York Rite Bodies:
I have also attended the Grand Chapter of Michigan, the Grand Council of R&S Masons of Michigan, the Grand Council of R&S Masons of New York, Grand Chapter of Kentucky, the Grand Council of R&S Masons of Kentucky, the Grand Commandery of Kentucky, Convent General KYCH, the Grand Chapter of British Columbia and Yukon, the Grand Council of R&S Masons of Ohio, , the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Quebec, the Grand Chapter of Manitoba, the Grand Council of R&S Masters of Western Canada, the Grand Chapter of Alberta, the Grand Council of R&S Masters of Ontario and the Red Cross of Constantine of the USA which was presided over by M. Ill Grand Sovereign William R. (Bill) Miller, who is with us today. Your Grand Master was invited to bring greetings from AMD of Canada on many of these occasions and was awarded honorary memberships in many. A fantastic time was enjoyed at all of these Conventions and many friendships were made. At this time I would like to thank our Deputy Grand Master R. Ven. Bro. Robert J. Turner KGC for representing me at the Grand Chapter convocation of Saskatchewan. My complete lists of visitations are attached to this report for your perusal.

International Relations:
I am very happy to report to you that our Order is doing very well both at home and overseas. We have a very strong relationship with the other AMD Grand Councils throughout the world. We have added another Grand Council to this list. The Grand Council of AMD in Romania was consecrated by the Grand Council of USA at the 2014 Masonic week. On receipt of a request from the Grand Council of Romania for recognition, and after careful consideration by our C & J Committee, I instructed our Grand Secretary to send a letter of recognition to Romania along with Invitations for our Grand Session. I have also nominated R. Ven. Bro. Brian Rountree KGC, our Grand Secretary to be their Grand Representative near our Grand Council with the approval of our Grand Executive. It is a delight to have M. Ven. Bro. Gabriel Gherasim SGC, the Sovereign Grand Master of AMD Romania and his delegation and their ladies with us today. I would take this opportunity to congratulate them on your behalf on a great beginning and wish them continued success. Bro. Gherasim, I assure you that our friendship which started two years ago will continue to grow in the future.
Due to the resignation of our M. Ven. Bro. Albert E. Card SCG, PSGM as the Grand Representative to the Grand Council of Western Australia near our Grand Council due to family commitment, I have nominated R. Ven. Bro. Robert J. Turner KGC, DGM as our Grand Rep. with the approval of our Grand Executive. This has been approved by the Grand Master of the Grand Council of Western Australia.
